Ladak Marathon

In August 2010, Ladakh experienced devastating flash floods that caused severe destruction across the region, affecting lives, homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. In response, the Ladakh Marathon was created in 2012 as both a symbol of recovery and a way to showcase Ladakh’s resilience to the world. The marathon was also designed to inspire Ladakhi youth to embrace sports and healthy lifestyles while providing a platform for competitive endurance running. From 1,500 participants in its inaugural edition, the event has grown into one of the world’s premier high-altitude marathon festivals with thousands of runners from India and abroad. A major milestone came in 2015 when the event became AIMS-certified, making it one of India’s internationally recognized marathons. In 2019, organizers adopted a major sustainability initiative by significantly reducing single-use plastic and promoting the philosophy: “Leave only footprints behind.”
