Forefoot Strike
A forefoot strike places the front of the foot on the ground before the heel lowers.
This pattern is more common among sprinters and runners moving at very high speeds, where quick ground contact and powerful propulsion are important.
Some distance runners also naturally use a forefoot strike, particularly during shorter races or uphill running.
Because this style places greater demands on the calves and Achilles tendon, changing to a forefoot strike too quickly can increase the risk of soreness or injury if the body has not adapted.

Changing simply because another runner lands differently is rarely a good reason.

It’s easy to become completely focused on where your foot lands.
In reality, efficient running depends on much more than the first point of contact.

Your stride length changes the forces travelling through your legs.

Looking at foot strike in isolation often misses the bigger picture.

Foot strike has become one of the most discussed subjects in running because it’s easy to see.
What matters far more is everything happening around it.
Efficient runners don’t simply land differently.
They move well as a complete system.
Their posture supports balance.
Their cadence matches their effort.
Their stride feels natural.
Their muscles work together with rhythm rather than tension.
Whether your foot lands on the heel, midfoot, or forefoot, the goal remains the same. Move comfortably, move efficiently, and allow your body to develop a running style that suits your own structure rather than chasing someone else’s technique. Understanding foot strike is an important step, but it’s only one chapter in the much bigger story of running well.
