The Tokyo Marathon was established in 2007 with the vision of creating a world-class marathon capable of rivaling the great city races of Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. By combining Japan’s existing elite marathon traditions with a mass-participation format, the event rapidly gained international recognition and became part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2013. Over less than two decades, the race has evolved into one of the most competitive and popular marathons in the world, attracting Olympic champions, world record holders, and hundreds of thousands of applicants while helping to cement Japan’s status as one of the global centers of distance running.
