The Boston Marathon was established in 1897, just one year after the first modern Olympic marathon in Athens, and has been held annually ever since except for the virtual-only edition during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Over nearly 130 years, the race has become one of the defining events in endurance sports, witnessing historic performances, groundbreaking moments in women’s athletics, inspirational stories of perseverance, and the evolution of marathon running itself. From the pioneering efforts of Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer to the resilience shown following the 2013 Boston Marathon tragedy, the race has continually reflected the spirit of determination and community that defines distance running.
