The Tarawera by UTMB 102K delivered another unforgettable edition this February, with rain, mud, and tough trail conditions adding even more drama to one of New Zealand’s biggest ultra races. More than 5,500 runners took part across the weekend, but all eyes were on the 102 kilometre race, where the home favourites once again stole the show. Despite the slippery trails and demanding climbs, the atmosphere looked incredible as runners moved through the forests and volcanic landscapes of New Zealand’s North Island.

For the women, Ruth Croft continued her amazing run at Tarawera, taking victory in 8:41:11 and claiming her fourth win at the event. She was pushed all the way by fellow New Zealander Caitlin Fielder, who stayed close throughout and finished just a few minutes behind, while Japan’s Honoka Akiyama rounded out the podium in third. Croft always seems to look completely at home on these trails, and this year was no different as she handled the difficult conditions with the same calm and strength she’s become known for.

In the men’s race, Daniel Jones made it four straight Tarawera titles with another commanding performance, crossing the line in 7:31:27. He pulled clear as the race went on and never gave the chasing group much of a chance to close the gap. Jacob Banta finished second and Max Yanzick took third, with both earning Western States 100 Golden Tickets along the way. With Ruth Croft and Daniel Jones both winning for the fourth time on home soil, it felt like a special weekend for New Zealand trail running and another memorable chapter in Tarawera’s growing story.
