April 26, 2026 will be remembered as one of the biggest days in marathon history. At the TCS London Marathon, Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe ran an astonishing 1:59:30, becoming the first athlete ever to officially break the two hour marathon barrier in a sanctioned race. It was a performance few thought possible this soon, and yet on the streets of London, Sawe made history look real. Crossing the line under two hours while racing under standard competition rules made the moment feel even bigger for the sport and for distance running as a whole.

What made the race even more incredible was how it unfolded. Sawe reached halfway in 60:29 before running a remarkable second half of 59:01, holding a relentless pace all the way to the finish. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha stayed with him deep into the race and finished second in 1:59:41, which also went under the previous world record. Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo followed in third with 2:00:28, also faster than the old record. For the first time ever, three men finished under 2:01 in the same marathon, making it one of the deepest and fastest races the sport has ever seen.

The historic day didn’t end there. In the women’s race, Tigst Assefa defended her London title in 2:15:41, improving her own women only world record, while Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei completed an incredibly fast podium behind her. But the headline belonged to Sawe and the barrier that once felt untouchable. For years, a sub two hour marathon in official race conditions was seen as one of sport’s greatest unanswered questions. In London, that question was finally answered, and marathon running may never feel quite the same again.
